Objectives of AU - AI

APET aims to achieve the following:

  1. 1.

Develop a continental AU-AI strategy which includes an AU-AI model law - to be recommended for adoption by Member States

  2. 2.

Develop knowledge products on AI for stakeholder engagements and capacity-building initiatives

  3. 3.

Bring together RECs and senior policymakers on the continent to address identified AI challenges and to ascertain public trust in AI systems, utilising the AUDA-NEPAD convening power

The strategy's goals are to enhance stakeholder engagements and capacity building on AI policy development and management. The generation of knowledge products based on this strategy offers technical advice to policymakers when developing national AI policies and strategies. The knowledge products will also help address the myths around AI technology by strengthening national and regional regulatory environments. Creating an enabling regulatory environment can address the implementation challenges that innovators in their AI pursuits face.

The indicators of a well-developed strategy include the launching of a comprehensive strategy and knowledge products. The AU-AI Continental Strategy for Africa model will serve at advancing responsible AI for ethical transparency and accountability, strengthen the capacity of African policymakers for AI policy development and implementation, and address the myths and misconceptions about AI. This will also help African countries adequately address challenges facing the continent and exploit opportunities in Africa.

The continental strategy captured all the necessary pillars that required attention in Africa for the effective implementation of AI technology. There is an emphasis on the policy direction for AI adoption in Africa and addressing human capital development. This is because ineffective policy implementation and inadequate human capital remain an impediment to sustainable partnerships and the implementation of emerging technologies in Africa. Thus, the ACCS intends to develop a smart Africa, use the data and information available across the continent, and foster learning, collaboration, and partnerships. AI experts further observed that Pillar 3 was crucial in developing an enabling environment that will be appealing for sustainable and strategic partnerships within technology implementation and regional and continental-wide partnerships.
