Development of the AU-AI Continental Strategy for Africa

The African Union High-Level Panel on Emerging Technologies (APET) published a report, titled, “AI For Africa: Harnessing Artificial Intelligence for Africa's Socio-economic Development”. In this report, APET recommended the need to develop an African Union Artificial Intelligence Continental Strategy through-which African countries can model their national strategies. Fundamentally, this continental strategy could be utilised as a model to develop Member States' national, regional, and continental AI strategies. To this end, APET and AUDA-NEPAD convened African AI experts to develop the AU-AI Continental Strategy for Africa (AACS). The AI experts included data scientists, natural language processing, AI innovators, entrepreneurs, academia, government officials, and the private sector. Therefore, the AU-AI Continental Strategy is focused on policy, stakeholder engagements, AI technology development and management, and regulation to manage data security and safeguarding technology.
